The Orlando area was inhabited by Native Americans before European explorers
and settlers first arrived in 1536. Originally called Jernigan, Orlando
gained its current name in 1857, one year after it was named the county
seat of Orange County in 1856. The town of Orlando was incorporated in
1875; it was later incorporated as a city in 1885.
Today, Orlando is the center of the third largest metropolitan area in
the state of Florida, with a population inside the city of 238,300. It
is also known as “The Theme Park Capital of the World,” drawing
more than 50 million tourists annually to attractions that include Walt
Disney World, SeaWorld, and Universal Studios.
